An event for Readers

Have you ever felt an event was organized for your hobby. I enjoy reading. Every summer book exhibitions are conducted but this year I had the fortune to enjoy an event for Reading. The Summer Reading Extravaganza was held on 9th July 2019 at the Carnegie Mellon Library. There were different events like voting for favorite author, chess competition, library tour, food trucks, etc. The best was the puppet show which had 5 stories each with a unique message. Although there were chairs in the room, the kids were overjoyed when it was announced that they can sit on the carpet just in front of the stage. One cannot miss the excitement in their eyes. It was so infectious that it brought out the child in me.

We used to spend the afternoons at home during summer vacations. I would end up with sun stroke every time I went out during afternoons. So I would spend hours reading different kinds of books and children magazines. The library also organized a Summer Reading 2019, where one can register and enter the books they read. There are targets and prizes for readers. I too registered for this activity. Personally I felt as if my hobby had become a person and was inviting me to pursue it. Incase I slow down there are reminders on buses, library walls, etc. Many of my friends enjoy reading but were not aware of this event. These are the events where the kids should be taken as they meet books in a different way. I thank the library and the city for organizing such an extraordinary event.

Frozen Treats with a Twist

Everyone waits for the arrival of Summers especially the children. The lovely carefree Summer Vacations for which we used to plan from February. In my hometown Baroda, the Summer was flagged by the presence of yummy bright yellow and orange mangoes. All the terraces used to be full of jars containing spicy pickles. All the roads were full of ice cream shops. I still remember tugging my Father’s hand the moment we passed the ice cream shop. These memorable events of life create an evergreen combination of ice cream and summer. Even today the very mention of Summer brings forth a sight of mango and ice cream. This has also encouraged creativity.

The first breakfast introduced to me after coming to the USA was Waffles and I immediately liked it. I have always had it with strawberry syrup but this year I was surprised. While wandering around the library I came across a nice shop called Waffallonia when I went to the library in downtown. There was a genuine smile on all the faces around that shop. They serve Waffles with Ice cream. I had the outstanding combination of Waffles, peanut butter and cinnamon ice cream.

Summer is also the time for juicy fruits like watermelon, grapes, etc. My mother always made sure, we have lots of fruits. One of her favorite ways to make us eat fruits was through fruit custard. She was really fast at that. Anytime we made a request and it would be present as a dessert. Last week, I went to the local library. It was really hot so I searched for frozen treats around library and came across The Meadows. There I came across different varieties of Frozen custard. This time it was frozen custard with crunchies.

Custard with Crunchies

Waffles, cream, crunchies are mostly available but it never occurs to us they could create such amazing desserts. This shows creativity has no limits, one can do so even with day to day things. Both Ice cream, waffles and custard are part of my list of favorite dishes but this year I had them with a twist. The trip to library definitely helped me discover these in addition to books. Next time you go for Ice Cream, do ensure you look around for something new in your regular favorite.

Option for an Individual

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

There are certain things which take you back to special moments of life. I recently had one such experience when I stood in front of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. It was raining heavily but I felt as if I had gone on a time travel to the first day of College. The 19th century architecture reminded me of my college days in Baroda University, which was established at the same time. How grown-up it felt to say we are leaving for college. There was one thing common in the first class of each subject. The professor suggested a number of books for each subject. We asked one of the professors how were we going to cover so many books in one academic session. The professor smiled and replied, those were books on the same topic by different authors. It is up to the student to select the book he or she wants to refer. Initially we referred to the books which were popular choice among seniors. But the curious ones could not resist the urge to explore all the books suggested by Professors and that lead us to the amazing stack in the library.

I entered the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in the same time travel mode. The entrance at the stack had welcome written in various languages including Hindi. The stack of a library is a special place. There is always pin drop silence although there are people. The atmosphere is so serene that one can almost feel the presence of knowledge. If knowledge were to have a fragrance, it would definitely be there in the stack. There are rows and rows of book shelves and benches on either side of the wall. There used to be a break of 3 hours between our theory and practical classes in the first year. We used to spend this time in the library. As I walked in the stack, I remembered how we referred to each book and then chose the one which suited us the most. It is so similar to life. We all are presented with an array of options be it work or hobbies but most of us go for the popular choice ones. We forget each of us is an individual and has unique abilities. Maybe its laziness or the fear of being different which prevents us from pursuing other options. But I feel, when we pursue the option which suits us we develop our personality. We feel satisfied and enlightened, something which is very rare in today’s life. So the next time you have to choose from an array of options, make sure to check each and select the one which suits the individual “YOU”.

Mark of success

This Friday I visited the library after a long time. Among all the magazines, the October’2013 issue of Fortune caught my attention. It had a photo of Sheryl Sandberg on its cover.

I issued the magazine. The first thing I read was the article on Sheryl Sandberg. It mentions almost all the responsibilities she handles at Facebook. Along with it she also wrote her book Lean In which is a bestseller. She did not stop there, she also started LeanIn.org. She is working even while she comes to office. After reading this I thought, we all get so many opportunities but all we do is procrastinate. For example the library is barely 10 minutes walk but I always have an excuse to not go but I can always manage a reason to have an icecream from the nearby shop.

To be successful one needs to be persistent. Even after achieving so much, she is still working on new things. At the same time she is also managing her family. This is a mark of success. We all begin things but soon give up and that is the reason we are not able to get our dreams. Thus to be extraordinary we need to do something extraordinary daily. I too have resolved to read the monthly journals on time. Lets hope I remain stuck to my resolution.

day 1 introduce yourself zero to hero challenge

Hello everyone,

First of all I would wish everyone a very happy and prosperous new year. I am Sanchita Sarkar, a software professional from India. I love reading, travelling and listening to music. I also enjoy a healthy discussion on different topics. The kind of discussions where all the people come out more informed. Offlate I seldom find people enjoying the same genre of interest as mine. Therefore I am here to blog, so that I can present my views to the world and recieve their perceptions as comments or discussions on my blog. Also because of our busy lives we hardly intereact with people outside our circle. Sometimes we kind of get into a cocoon. We never realize what people on the other side of the world think or are going through. I believe blogging would give me an opportunity to connect to the world.

Every human being has different facet. Even scientists are musicians or the most mature person may enjoy cartoons. But we are generally not aware of the other side of these personalities. I want to take this opportunity to express my different thoughts and people around the world to put their inputs on those thoughts.

As for my blog, I want to write about anything under the sun. This could mean technology, social media, travelling, music and the list goes on. This blog is a medium to bring my views to the world. As you can see my previous two blogs, I have written about my experience of celebrating Christmas in school in one and the other contains my views on eReaders and libraries. One deals with childhood memories wherease the other deals with change in lifestyle due to technology. The blog may also contain experiences in short or long trips or one day experience. I want to connect to varied people around the world. Blogging successfully in 2014 will make my creative side happy.

Happy Blogging

Sanchita

To Read or to eRead.

Recently I read an article about the increase in sales of e-Readers. Almost every publishing company has started its own e-Reader whether kindle or nook. This definitely is a good news for budding authors as publishing an eBook is less expensive than publishing a hard copy book. Also having an eReader does not require one to maintain a cabinet for books. With an eReader in hand one can read any book any time. This is particularly important for those who travel a lot. This has created a debate whether eBooks will replace books and libraries will be a thing of the past. It has almost become a question of whether to read or to eRead.

The other day I saw the photo of an old library of the city. It brought back memories of my college. The interiors were huge with pin drop silence. The presence of books reminded me of my summer vacations when we used to share books so that we can read more. This also increased our friend circle and helped us to find like minded people. Books have always been the best ice-breakers for me. One cannot gift an eBook to anyone. Also the thought of mother reading a fairy tale from a book, with beautiful pictures, to children would never be same if the book were an ebook. Also facing a screen continuously has side effects. Hence it is difficult to say whether eReaders will be able to replace the experience of having a hard bound book. As for me, I still love the fragrance of fresh binding.
