A day for Books

Today is World Book Day, a day to celebrate books and the love for reading. I was always fond of reading so the presence of this day simply means a lot to me. Whenever I go to a new city, the first thing I look for is the library. I still remember the first book exhibition held in office. It was my first year of job. I was still learning to live in a new city with room mates. Books were my best friends. Smartphones had not yet entered the markets then. I went around the books and the first thing that caught my attention was a Pocket Dictionary or a Mini Dictionary. My eighth grade English teacher used to say “If possible, always keep a Pocket Dictionary with yourself”. Like an obedient student I bought the dictionary.

This Dictionary was a huge help everytime I came accross a new word. During the same time one of my room mates was preparing for open tests for Management studies. One day she was confused about a word while solving the english questions. I had pulled out the dictionary, found the meaning and helped her solve the question. I could see the appreciation in her eyes when I completed. I told her once you find a meaning using a dictionary, you will always remember it. From then onwards, she too used to follow the same method. A few weeks later there was a long weekend, all of had planned to go home. Before leaving, she too bought the same Dictionary. Books allow one to inspire others. I still love the fragrance of fresh binding. There is a book for each mood, whether sad or happy, bored or relaxed, fiction or non-fiction, etc. Whenever I find a person liking a book that I like, I immediately am able to connect to him or her. People say with the advent of various gadgets, the habit of reading may get impacted but I feel the excitement of having an interesting book will always remain the same. I would like to keep this day to set up a checklist for reading for the entire year. That would help us in continuing this hobby. How do you think one should celebrate the World Book Day?

Growth in Isolation

Social distancing is the need of the hour. The fear of the deadly Covid-19 is everywhere. We all are aware of this pandemic. Suddenly there is a lot of free time and so everyone is confused about what to do. Be it television, radio or whatsapp its the same fear everywhere. As we isolate ourselves this fear seems to be gripping us even more. This stress needs to be reduced before it starts affecting our relations. All we can do is to keep our distances and pray that a vaccine is discovered soon. Until then we all need to find a way to use this time. This is the opportunity to look at your lives, find out those dreams and work on them. With schools and colleges closed, one needs to find ways to spend quality time with your family.

I have always wanted to read books randomly but always picked those about which I had heard. The day before the library was closed, I went there and browsed through the stack. This time it was not the bestseller list or recommendations, it was any book which intrigued me be it the title or prologue or even the book cover. Similarly there are whole lot of hobbies one can take up. It is important to do something creative with all the tension around. Go ahead, pull out the old guitar, clean it and start playing it. If possible make a video and share it on social media. Your effort will definitely inspire many. Watch a movie and put up a review or make a video of that recipe and share it, organize the closet or find an online course. If not anything start meditating but do not allow the negativity to stop you from discovering yourself. Let there be growth in isolation. As the times are getting tougher, let us pray that a vaccine is found soon.

A colorful compound

A morning in monsoon

We love to be in our comfort zones but deep withing always imagine an absolutely different life. My father was into shipping. Needless to say Baba always told us maritime stories. While growing up I always wondered how life would be on a ship with no firm ground within one’s feet. He always used to look forward to his work after the leaves. He was unable to pursue any other hobby because of his work. Hence when he retired, the first thing that stuck him was to find a hobby.

My colourful backyard

My colourful backyard

At that time, the backyard of our house was quite bare. It was summers when Baba took up the responsibility of making it green. When he told me, I looked at mom but mom had complete confidence on him. His new hobby started taking up most of his time. He has always been a very ‘jugadi’ person. Soon he was visiting all the nurseries, consulting them for different plants and manure. By the time the winters came, our compound was already green with plants that need less water. A garden in a bengali house is not complete unless there are flowers. He started looking for different flowers. By the end of next monsoon our compound was full of jaba(shoeflower) of different colours and shiuli(jasmine) flowers . Infact the backyard is always pleasant with their fragrance.

As usual he again became a role model for us. There is no age to take up a hobby and pursue it. After spending 40 years in sea he not only took up gardening but also changed his compound from bare to colourfull. As usual we often wonder, if we are too old to create a new interest and pursue it. Often we spend more time in creating excuses for not pursuing it then looking for information to take it up. Baba just showed there is no age to learning. So the next time you feel like taking up a hobby be it anything from mountaineering to learning a musical instrument, just go ahead and start working on it. Because a hobby gives a change to the otherwise mundane life. Once you excel it, you create a colorful compound full of fragrant flowers.

Live every moment

Today I read the blog http://ellieverse.com/2014/01/12/a-glance-into-the-ellieverse. It had pictures taken in the blogger’s day-to-day life. These ranged from sunrise to sunset to cakes, etc. Seeing this I realized it has been a long time since I saw the sunrise or sunset. On weekdays my mornings are spent in getting ready for work, on weekends I am asleep as the sun rises. Also since sunset happens daily, I seldom bother to catch it. There are many small beautiful moments in our lives which we seldom appreciate. As time passes we grow old and then one day we realize we had wasted so many amazing moments for the one moment we were chasing.

Another blog which got me thinking was http://linkingloops.wordpress.com/2014/01/10/i-should-be-mopping-the-floors/ where it is mentioned that one needs to take rest and do something that he/she enjoys. This just goes with the theme above, just dont keep running, take rest and then start. Remember slow and steady wins the race. Also you need to unwind yourself. There is nothing better than taking up a hobby or even going for a walk in the evening. You will be able to catch the amazing sunset. The third post that caught my attention was http://inasearchofbalance.wordpress.com/2014/01/08/step-outside/ where the blogger went out to click the pics of the season change after a hard day’s work. On seeing the pics you would realize he was rewarded with the most beautiful scenary.

All the above just reminded me to take rest, enjoy the moment and then move ahead. As they say its the journey is more interesting than the destination. By the time, I came to the end of this blog, I remembered the last time I saw sunrise was in Kanyakumari. Below is the pic:

Garden of Thoughts

Garden of Thoughts

Today’s challenge was to write on why I wanted to start this blog. It took me to my most cherished hobby, reading. I am a voracious reader. As the time goes by I forget the reviews of the books. I wanted to share reviews of the books I read and keep them afresh. Since I wanted my reviews to be available anytime anywhere, I started my first blog sanchitasarkar.wordpress.com. Soon it became a hobby. I also received appreciation from many people.

One Saturday morning in september’2013 I got up from sleep and saw clouds in the sky. It was a beautiful morning, cloudy sky, cool breeze and a holiday. I sat with a steaming cup of tea and a book on the balcony. I felt absolutely relaxed and stressfree. Somehow I wished I could capture that moment somewhere with whatever I felt. It was at that I felt like writing my thoughts on other experiences as well. That is how I got the idea for starting this second blog. A photo album only preserves the photos but not the feelings but a blog preserves what you write. Moreover with the advent of smartphones blogs can be read anywhere. This blog will also serve as an album of some of the most amazing experiences I have had.

I have kept the photo containing flowers of various colors to indicate that the blog will contain my thoughts on everything I see or feel. I participated in this competition because I wanted to improve my blogging skills as well. I must say yesterday I learnt a lot about using widgets. I hope to learn more about blogging.
