Be a healthchaser

According to the statistics of WHO, more than 40 million children under the age of 5 are overweight. Today most of the parents are educated and aware of the problems of obesity then why do so many kids suffer from this problem. I observed a few kids and found the following:

1. Most of them have a liking towards fast food. Somehow I do not see this craze for fruits.

2. Many are glued to television or computer games for hours which explains the reason for the long queues for spectacles.

3. Some of the advertisements just point out the demerits of going out in the sun. As a result many people stay indoors.

I understand due to the fast growing cities, the number of playing grounds are reducing. But most of the schools still have their grounds. There are swimming classes at many places. Similarly most of the sports clubs also offer coaching. Also the parents can form an association and hire any sports ground for practice. In my building, the parents formed a group and hired a karate teacher to come and teach in our building premises. Last year a skating instructor was invited. There was no need to take the kids anywhere, which made it possible for working mothers also to send their kids for an activity. Every evening while returning from office, I used to get refreshed just at the sight of those kids learning something new on their vacations.

Today I read an article which mentioned about All India Kaustubh Memorial Basketball Tournament, Navi Mumbai Basketball League and Navi Mumbai under-16 Football League getting started. Kudos to Times of India for highlighting these news. I think even these small events need to have proper coverage, only then the kids will be motivated to pursue these hobbies. Also awareness related to healthy eating should be spread through television. One such initiative was launched by Radio mirchi to inspire people to pursue an activity. The parents need to understand that the kids should be motivated to go out, play and chase the sun to be healthy. I just hope the number of children suffering from obesity reduces.

Time to retrospect

March and April are the months where most of the local new years take place in India. Just last week, we celebrated “Gudi padwa”, “Ugadi” and “Cheti Chand”. We will have the Baisakhi, “Poila Boishakh” and Vishu in the coming weeks. These new years have a bigger influence on our social lives than 1st jan. Firstly they create a festive atmosphere where people go to meet their families. Hence on these days, the roads are generally desserted. The sweet shops are full of delicacies. Everyone seems to be dressed in bright outfits.

I take this time to review my progress on resolutions taken on 1st Jan. In most of the cases I had given up but this year I came across a book, which gave a nice method of dividing the resolutions to different quarters of the year instead of taking them all at once. Well I did that and took just 2 resolutions in the first quarter. Well I have not been able to complete both but I have been able to pursue them which is still better than the previous years. One of my last year’s resolution was to blog. Well I have been able to blog at regular intervals, thanks to <a href="”>articles on pursuing blogs and the funny stories.

Let us hope I complete my this year’s resolution and welcome the next year with a renewed enthusiasm to improve myself.

Mark of success

This Friday I visited the library after a long time. Among all the magazines, the October’2013 issue of Fortune caught my attention. It had a photo of Sheryl Sandberg on its cover.

I issued the magazine. The first thing I read was the article on Sheryl Sandberg. It mentions almost all the responsibilities she handles at Facebook. Along with it she also wrote her book Lean In which is a bestseller. She did not stop there, she also started LeanIn.org. She is working even while she comes to office. After reading this I thought, we all get so many opportunities but all we do is procrastinate. For example the library is barely 10 minutes walk but I always have an excuse to not go but I can always manage a reason to have an icecream from the nearby shop.

To be successful one needs to be persistent. Even after achieving so much, she is still working on new things. At the same time she is also managing her family. This is a mark of success. We all begin things but soon give up and that is the reason we are not able to get our dreams. Thus to be extraordinary we need to do something extraordinary daily. I too have resolved to read the monthly journals on time. Lets hope I remain stuck to my resolution.
