Corporate Maternity leave

Maternity leave is the most sought after leave of married ladies in corporate offices. Generally its 3 months long. There has often been a debate about extending it. Here are three perspectives that I would like to bring forward:

Women
Ladies generally work till the 9th month and then go for this leave right before delivery. After delivery they become weak and the three months are needed for recovery. Even after 3 months the child is completely dependent on the mother. As a result many women go for a leave without pay or sabbatical after their maternity leaves. Those who continue generally create a support system of inlaws, nannies and day-care centers. Many of them even leave their jobs. Therefore women feel that the leave should be extended for 2 years.

Men
Generally the paternity leave is of 1 week in corporate offices. This is often the cause of envy of the men. They too feel like spending time with their newborn child, seeing him/her speak first word or take their first steps. They keep calling home after every 1 hour to know the status of their child. They often comment that Paternity leave should be increase to atleast 6 months.

Company
Now we come to the company. They have to pay the female candidates during the maternity leave. If we see from their perspective its a great expense but the corporate culture always encourages it. Increasing it to 2 years will be a big hit on their budget. On top of it if its increased then men too will demand that the paternity leave be increased.

This debate will continue forever. These days women have really excelled in creating a support system. Merrisa Mayer has proved that a mother of a new born baby can do wonders.

After a long day!!!

We make resolutions every year and break them. This year I had decided I will be more organized and read a few more books than last year. As they say “With an inch its a cinch, with yard its hard”. This year I had planned that I will do a little bit everyday to remain focused on my resolutions. I keep numerous things to do every day. Today’s tasks were simple. They were:

– To read atleast 10 pages of a book(which I am trying to read for the last 3 weeks but somehow not able to complete)

– To tidy atleast one part of the room if not all

Today morning I got up on time but it was cold morning and I rescheduled the alarm and went to sleep. Ultimately I woke up just in time to get ready and catch the bus in a jiffy. After I returned home, I just sat down. As for write here, write now, I don’t feel like doing anything. Somehow the dinner is made and I am having it. I feel guilty for not doing even the reading bit. I am not feeling like giving any exertion to my eyes. The television is on and there is something going on but I am not watching it. Just to ensure that there is some noise its on. It would be great to start meditation but I will not add it to my list because again I will not do it. I just wish we could sleep longer during winter hours and the days were slightly longer than 24 hours. Let me know if anyone else has had such a feeling and if there are any tips to face it.

Yesterday and today

When talking about generations, the first thing that came to my mind is my parent’s generaqtion. I have always loved to see how my parents always faced all the problems togather. This sunday was our republic day. The first republic day was on 26th january,1950. That was the time, India was learning to work as an independent nation. Those times were full of struggle for the nation. My parents grew up during the seventies. Hence they too were viewers of those struggles. Somehow their generation embodied the spirit to do well inspite of all odds.

Their generation has been able to create a right role model for us. I just don’t know whether I will be able to live up to the same expectations as them. The only thing that puzzles me about their generation is they think that we have recieved everything very easily. As far as infrastructure and education facilities are concerned yes but doing anything today implies facing lot more competition than their time. Also we are global citizens today so the scope too has expanded. This is particularly in case of software professionals. Many people from the previous generation believe that we have a great life in AirConditioned offices but they don’t know the competition that we have to face daily to live up to the expectations of everyone. I just hope they acknowledge this struggle and stop believing we have got everything easily.

How my boring bus ride became interesting

I was coming from Mumbai to Pune. It takes around 4-5 hours due to traffic in mumbai. Once you are out of mumbai, the mumbai-pune expressway is just too good. The bus passes through lonavala. I was as usual sitting in the bus fiddling with my cellphone which was running short of battery.

I didn’t realize we had reached lonavala. All of a sudden the bus stopped. We all looked up. After 15 minutes someone came and said, something went wrong, it is being repaired. We all got down from the bus. It was monsoon and lonavala was at its best. The clouds falling over the mountains was just mesmerising. There was a beautiful fog. I realised what a beautiful scene I was missing. Today we have become so accustomed to our gadgets that we just ignore the simple beauties of life. I gave up all the worries, kept my cellphone inside the bag and began to enjoy the ride. A little way further, the bus stopped at a restaurant. In that beautiful cloudy, foggy yet breezy weather, I had onion fries and a cup of steaming hot tea. There was a small bookshop there. As I was going through the books, my eyes fell on a book “Anything for you, mam”. I bought it and began reading. It was a cute, urban love story set in the backdrop of engineering college. The book made my ride even more enjoyable.

After coming home, I couldn’t help writing a review on that book. But I would’nt have enjoyed the ride so much had the bus not stopped. As murphy’s law states “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”. We must accept this and learn to thank anything and everything that happens.

The flag and the anthem on a winter morning

Amazing google doodle to respect Republic day

Happy Republic Day

Today is 26th January. This day is celebrated as Republic day in India. On 26th January,1950 our constitution came into force. This day always brings back special memories of school. The marchpast and celebration in New Delhi is telecast all over the country.

We used to have Marchpast and flag hoisting in schools on this day. To prepare for this day we used to practice marchpast everyday. Even in Winters we used to be in school at 7:00 am just to practice marching. The choir used to prepare songs on patriotism. There used to be speeches given on the importance of this day. The drummers used to be ready to beat the drum on the prescribed ways. It used to be an all new excitement. On the Republic day we used to dress up in our uniform and go to school. The school used to be decorated with ribbons of the tricolor. There was a competition of the marchpast among the different houses (Red, blue, green, yellow). Towards the end of the event the winning house’s name was declared. After the event we used to rush home to catch the Republic day parade on national television.

The entire day used to be almost like a festival. Getting up in the morning, dressing up in our starched and ironed uniforms, ensuring that our sweater colors and lengths are same and paying respect to our national anthem and flag. Practising for these events induced a will to work towards perfection, in us. I wish we could continue these activities in work places as well. I am glad that google has paid respect through its doodle today.

shocked by a honk on a lonely road (Part 2)

The first part was mentioned in the blog https://sanchitahobby.wordpress.com/2014/01/06/shocked-by-a-honk-on-a-lonely-road/.

We reached Buffalo in the morning. After a quick breakfast we thought we will freshen up in a motel and then go to visit the Niagra. We roamed and roamed but somehow we were unable to find a motel. The roads were also lonely so we were unable to ask any directions to anyone. Suddenly we heard a honk by a cop car. This left us shocked…

We were unable to think about a reason for the honk. In the 5 seconds before stopping the car we checked the lights inside and indicators for lights outside. Nothing seemed to be wrong then what was the reason. Those 5 seconds of anxiety were like ages. We stopped and my friend Arun, who was driving, rolled down the window. The cop car stopped on our side and the driver rolled down the window. He gave a pleasant smile and asked:

Cop: What are you looking for?

Arun: We are looking for a motel but are unable to find one.

Cop: Oh! Do one thing, rather than take a turn in the next lane, go straight and take a turn in the lane after next. There you will find many motels and restaurants.

Arun: Thanks.

I can’t express the relief which we all felt. We realized we were going through the same lane again and again. I don’t know how much gas we might have spent on the same route had that cop not guided us. We did find the motel at the place mentioned by him. Also the weather was perfect to see the beauty of Niagra. Here is a pic of the falls
